Alkaline Lye

Alkaline Lye is a caustic chemical substance. It can damage surfaces that it comes into contact with, including your skin. Alkaline Lye is so corrosive that protective gear must be worn when working with it. Alkaline Lye is a substance sprayed onto synthetic hair  fibers to preserve it from growing mold.

Ammonia

Ammonia is used as a pesticide and popular dyeing agent in hair production. Ammonia pulls apart layers of the hair’s proteins, so that the dye can access the hair shaft. If constantly exposed to this chemical in high levels, your body could experience respiratory  irritation, burning sensations and endocrine disruption.

What is pH balance?

pH balance measures how alkaline or acidic something is on a scale from 0 to 14. Levels between 0 and 6.9 are acidic. While level 7 is neutral, and any measure between 7.1 and 14 is alkaline.

Hair/Scalp pH balance

The ideal pH for your hair is 3.67-5.0, while the ideal scalp pH is 5.5. This scalp range is slightly more acidic to keep fungi and bacteria from growing in your scalp. An imbalance in pH levels can cause dandruff, oily scalp, hair-loss, itching, dryness and dull hair.

Why is pH balance important?

When your hair and sebum (natural  oils) are pH-balanced, the result is strong, durable, shining hair that looks healthy and sits on a clean balanced scalp that does not have excessive alkaline. Unfortunately, when your hair and scalp pH levels are unbalanced, it can lead to damage, irritation and dryness.  Even worse, you may experience thinning hair if the issue remains unchecked.
